Volunteer

The Remakery is being brought to life by a large community of volunteers through what we are calling "community self-build".

This means that the majority of work on site is being done by volunteers, under skilled supervision. As is all the project development work done behind the scenes. This keeps costs low and means the Remakery is truly being made by the community it will serve. It also means we need a constant stream of volunteers to help with construction to make the Remakery happen.

If you'd like to volunteer please fill in this form, or contact Kathe Jacob on 07796 685 241 / kathe19@blueyonder.co.uk. If you have specialist skills to offer please email our construction manager Pete Boyce, pete@remakery.org. You can also simply come along to the site and meet some of the team, any day from Mon-Sat - see directions here, and more details of the weekly timings below.

Why volunteer?
The rewards of volunteering can be great:
  • New experiences, opportunities to gain skills and add to your CV;
  • Ways to make a contribution by applying and sharing your existing skills;
  • A place to network and make friends, and be part of creating a new resource for the community.

Volunteer behind the scenes

We are looking for a number of people to join our growing team (March / April 2013):

  • A budding architect or designer to design and make our onsite signage;
  • A graphic designer to support us with regular design work and help finalise our 'look';
  • A volunteer organiser to help look after our growing band of volunteers;
  • Skilled volunteers to join our plumbing and electrical teams.

If any of these sound interesting please get in touch with Kathe Jacob either by email or on 0779 668 5241.

Volunteering on site

Recent volunteers at the Remakery construction site commented:

"Great to get away from my desk and do something physical. Also really happy to learn about what the Remakery will be in future, and have a hand in building it... I hope to be able to come back and dedicate a couple of hours a week - this is volunteering with concrete results."

"Bustin down a wall was great therapy... Nice to meet the team!"

One of our volunteers and founder members, Mark, made this short film about the power of volunteering at the Remakery!

Volunteer timetable and details
Volunteers can come along:
  • On Wednesdays and Thursdays (10-1pm or 2-5pm)*;
  • Saturdays (anytime between 10-4pm);
  • During our site social on Thursday evenings (6-9pm), an opportunity to help out and meet new people involved in the project.

* You can volunteer on other weekdays but these are our priorities.

Ways you can volunteer include:
  • Casual Volunteering - straightforward tasks, minimum half a day; a quick way to contribute and find out more about the project.
  • Work-Parties - teams from external organisations or informal groups can volunteer for a fixed period (e.g. a day, a week, or a regular weekly session). Contact us if you're interested in organising a team!
  • Project Volunteering - an individual or team can take responsibility for a defined project (e.g. fitting out part of the interior).
  • Placements - commit to an agreed role (e.g. supervising a team or assisting a contractor), 2 or more days per week for a set period of time (2 weeks - 6 months).
  • Expert Volunteering - advisory or flexible input from people with relevant expertise e.g. in construction, self-build or volunteer management.
